2010 Winegrape Field Testing for Harvest
University of Vermont (UVM) Vineyard

Each cultivar in the vineyard was sampled weekly to assess berry maturity and determine harvest readiness. This field testing began following veraison and as each cultivar was approaching harvest.

Notes on Methods:

Ten berries were removed from each of the six, 4-vine replicates (‘panels’) per cultivar for a target total of 60 berries per cultivar. Berries were selected from random clusters evenly distributed within the panel, from the middle of any cluster’s length, from both sides of the row, and from locations with various aspects of sun exposure. Berries were crushed gently by hand within ziploc bags to release the juice.

  • A calibrated pH meter was used to determine the pH of the juice from each sample.
  • Soluble solid concentration value (degrees Brix) was read on a refractometer to the nearest half degree.
  • Total acidity (TA) was measured for the juice from each sample using titration with 0.1N NaOH to a pH of 8.2.

NOTE: Field testing for a cultivar was discontinued following harvest.
