Extracellular Freezing
Ice forms on surface of cell or between protoplast and cell wall
Ice crystals outside grow larger as water is withdrawn from inside cell
Water diffuses through plasma membrane to intercellular space
Water out, solutes in cell more concentrated
Increases resistance inside to freezing
