Opening remarks, the why (RealAudio version)

Welcome to Herbaceous Garden Plants Online, perhaps the first course on this subject offered totally online from the University of Vermont(UVM), and on the web! It grew out of a traditionally offered course at the University of Vermont, PSS123, Garden Flowers and Indoor Plants, offered fall of odd-numbered years. This course came about for a number of reasons:

--my personal interest in the web, and belief that as a university we, as faculty, should take advantage of this wonderful and unprecedented tool and vehicle for outreach and education, especially in a time of increased interest in distance learning

--the need of traditional students at UVM for this course, but who could not schedule it

--the overwhelming response from the "internet public" for this, based on months of prior market research (if you are one of these, thanks for your responses!)

This latter group, the off-campus potential "students", began as Vermonters who wanted to take the University class, but had problems getting to campus several times a week, or from great distances. Beyond Vermont though, are many interested in this subject, who similarly don't have it offered locally or couldn't schedule it into their busy schedules--another benefit of this course: the ability to take it at one's own pace.
