Montreal Botanic Gardens and Biodome Tour
Tuesday June 27, 2000
Due to popular request, I am pleased to be able to offer a day tour to Montreal to the world famous Botanic Gardens and Biodome. If you haven't been to the gardens recently and seen the changes, or if you've tried to drive in Montreal traffic in recent years, you wont want to miss this opportunity.
Leaving the Horticulture Research Center in So. Burlington (behind Heritage Ford off Rte. 7 south) at 8am, returning around 6pm, we'll travel in a Premier luxury coach. Refreshments will be served going and coming, and the videos on the bus will give you an overview of these gardens-- the second largest in the world-- and show you the development of them on the way up, and showcase other gardens including several new ones from England on the way back. The tour price includes admission to the greenhouse conservatories, gardens, insectarium and biodome. Keep in mind the mileage alone (figured at the federal rate) if you drove would be about 50% more than the total price of this tour, and wouldn't even include parking and gardens admissions, as well as the chance to meet and learn from others with garden interests--all part of this tour.
The 11 greenhouses have changing seasonal displays, and extensive collections of plants such as orchids, begonias, ferns and cacti. This tour is timed partly to coincide with bloom of the 10,000 or so roses. The gardens also include the largest Chinese garden outside China (done in the style of the Ming Dynasty) and the largest Penjin (Chinese bonsai) collection in North America; the modernistic Japanese garden, tea room and bonsai collection; and many specialty gardens such as rock garden, perennials, roses, trees and shrubs. The Insectarium has many "hands-on" exhibits and can easily take a couple hours just learning about the magical life of insects, with an adjacent butterfly house. Then there is the new Tree House, a museum and discovery center for trees. The Biodome is a must-see if you haven't, and if you have-- always fun. Under one roof are four separate environments-- the tropical rain forest, temperate zone, maritime (where one can view above and below the water), and the polar regions. You walk among the plants and animals, living together in their "natural" environment.
If you feel you can only take a couple hours of gardens, or want to mix them with some city life, you're only a short subway ride from the gardens to downtown Montreal, old Montreal and Chinatown where you can dine and shop. You're bound to meet other horticulture professionals and master gardeners also on this tour. Any family or friends interested in joining you? Send in your registration NOW in order to guarantee seats on this relaxing, comfortable and educational tour last offered eight years ago.
