one (1) credit (approximately 12 "class" hours, 36 homework hours)

meetings: 4-7pm, Milton TBA; Tuesdays May 25, Jun 22, Jul 20, & Aug 17

Objectives:

To give you familiarity and more knowledge about various perennials and herbaceous plants blooming at different times of the season, their new cultivars, care and maintenance, and hands-on learning of the latter and aspects of gardening practices.

Assignments:

(250 points maximum per class, 1000 maximum for course, grades determined on standard 10 point scale ie 90-100=A, 80-89=B, etc.) For each class:

1)Journal: You will be expected to keep a journal of each class, of at least two pages for each class (minimum 200 words). This should cover such items as practices to do that month, tools and their use, procedures on planting and maintenance and the like. Grading will be done on completeness. 50 points per class

2)Plant List: You will be expected to keep a list of plants in bloom, particularly those we cover, in each class. For each you should list scientific (underlined as appropriate) and common names, and brief notes such as leaves, height, spread, flower color as appropriate. 50 points per class

3)Plants: You should pick 3 herbaceous genera in bloom at each class that appeal to you. For each, you should fill out a plant form as handed out, or as available to copy and paste from http://pss.uvm.edu/pss123/plntform.htm

For those genera already on Perry’s Perennial Pages (http://pss.uvm.edu/ppp/perpix.htm)

or the PSS123 course (http://pss.uvm.edu/pss123/lecplnts.html)

you should list additional species or cultivars. For those genera not on these sites, list species and cultivars as appropriate, or if many, those most commonly found. You should use, and list, at least 3 references which may be websites, books, or other. If you have trouble finding such, please contact the instructor. Often typing the plant name into a search engine such as Google will yield such websites, often being nurseries. Grading will be done on completeness, accuracy, spelling. 50 points per plant, 150 points total per class

Assignments will be due 2 weeks after each class. Mark your calendars. Points will be deducted for being late. They may be dropped off at the main PSS office in the Hills Building on campus, or mailed to the instructor at the above address. They will be returned at the following class. For the last class, final work may be picked up as announced at the Hills building, or will be mailed back (please provide a self addressed envelope).
