Objectives:
To give you familiarity and more knowledge with various plants, and design styles of gardens of these countries. Some of the gardens visited will include: El Escorial, gardens of La Granja de San Ildefonso, Madrid Botanic Gardens, Aranjuez Royal Gardens, Alhambra Palace and Generalife, Royal Palace of the Alcazar, Palace of Viana's patio garden, and Gardens of the Christian Monarchs. Assignments
(1000 maximum for course, grades determined on standard 10 point scale ie 90-100=A, 80-89=B, etc.)
1)Journal: You will be expected to keep a journal of the trip, of at least two pages for each day (minimum 200 words). This should cover such items as gardens visited and their locations, unique points on each such as practices and plantings and plants. Grading will be done on completeness and proper spellings of plants, people, places. 500 points
2)Paper: You will be expected to write a minimum ten (10) page paper single-spaced (or equivalent double spaced) on a the overall design style of gardens of this region. You should discuss such features as history/use of such gardens, listing of some typical gardens, characteristics, and commonly used plants. Websites and books (UVM, other libraries, bookstores) may be useful references in addition to materials acquired at gardens. Grading will be done on completeness, accuracy, and attention to spelling/grammar. 500 points
References will be placed on reserve in the library, with readings assigned prior to the tour.
