In this cooperative project with Cornell University,
we are evaluating nitrogen and phosphorus leaching losses and crop use
efficiency at research facilities in Willsboro, NY, that allow direct measurement
of nutrients leached into drainage tile lines. Manure is being applied
at different times --early and late fall or early or late spring – on both
orchardgrass and silage corn plots. Results will lead to recommendations
for optimum timing of manure to minimize leaching losses and maximize crop
nutrient use and economic return.
